Why I Quit Caffeine (and the Cozy Latte That Made It Feel Like Self-Care)

An Ayurvedic Guide to Reclaiming Your Natural Energy with Veena Ayurveda | Jordann Kian

If you’re familiar with the four pillars of health, you already know that Brahmacharya “the wise use of our energy” is about protecting and directing your life force instead of scattering it. For years, my morning matchas and chai teas felt like the ultimate act of self-care. It gave me that quick buzz, helped me feel productive, and was part of a comforting ritual.

But over time I noticed the hidden cost: the afternoon crash, the anxiety spikes, the wired-but-tired feeling, and the way my energy never felt truly steady. In Ayurvedic terms, caffeine is a stimulant that strongly increases vata dosha (the energy of movement in the body and mind). It creates dryness, overstimulates the nervous system, and eventually leads to that exhausting rajas-tamas cycle such as the high-energy rush (rajas) followed by fatigue and heaviness (tamas).

When I finally let caffeine go, everything changed. My energy became calm and sustainable. Sleep improved. Digestion felt smoother. And I felt more like myself again. Clearer, more grounded, and better able to hold loving boundaries.

Today I’m sharing everything I learned so you can make the same gentle shift. This post is your complete guide: why caffeine affects us the way it does, how it impacts the three doshas, and a simple, step-by-step way to reduce or release it with grace.

What Is Caffeine, Really?

Caffeine is a drug that stimulates the central nervous system. In Ayurveda it aggravates vata dosha, which governs all movement such as digestion, nervous system activity, even the flow of your thoughts. When vata gets out of balance you might experience:

  • Dryness (skin, colon, joints)

  • Anxiety or restlessness

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Fatigue and adrenal depletion

  • Headaches

  • Dependency and irregular bowel movements

It also depletes ojas (your deep inner vitality and glow) and can create a false sense of energy that actually drains your reproductive tissues over time.

Why Do We Reach for It?

Most of us have very relatable reasons. Here’s what I hear all the time, plus nourishing alternatives that support sattva (the state of balance, clarity, and steady energy):

  • “I love the ritual” → Swap for a warm herbal tea or spiced golden milk. The comforting feeling stays.

  • “It makes me more productive” → Caffeine gives a short high followed by a low. When you reduce it, your mind naturally moves toward sattva — clear, focused, and sustainably energized.

  • “It’s just part of my routine” → Small changes to your daily rhythm (dinacharya) create big shifts in how you feel.

  • “I need it for my morning bowel movement” → When your digestive fire (agni) is strong and balanced, elimination happens naturally — no harsh stimulants required.

  • “I have it with breakfast” → Try warm, spiced porridge or stewed fruit instead.

  • “I love the buzz” → That buzz is rajasic (overly stimulating). Choosing sattva gives you true, lasting vitality instead.

How Caffeine Affects Your Body & Energy

  • Reproductive health — It can increase the chances of infertility by depleting deeper tissues.

  • Premature aging — The drying effect reduces ojas and vitality.

  • Nervous system stress — It makes deep rest, meditation, and presence harder.

  • Dosha imbalance:

    • Vata types often feel more anxious and scattered.

    • Pitta types may notice irritability or heat.

    • Kapha types can experience water retention, weight gain, or sugar cravings.

  • Digestion — Caffeine pulls energy away from the gut, interrupts agni, and can cause gas, constipation, or loose stools.

Special note: If you deal with anxiety, depression, or high stress, caffeine often makes things feel heavier.

5 Powerful Reasons to Reduce or Remove Caffeine

  1. Your digestive system will thank you — Less dryness, gas, constipation, and irritation as vata and pitta come back into balance.

  2. You’ll break the exhausting rajas-tamas cycle — No more highs and crashes. Steady, natural energy instead.

  3. Your sleep will dramatically improve — Even one morning cup can affect your nervous system all day and night.

  4. You’ll protect your long-term vitality — Better hormones, clearer skin, and slower aging.

  5. You’ll feel more like yourself — Clearer mind, calmer presence, and stronger energy boundaries.

Quick tip on sugar: Adding refined sugar to coffee or tea creates extra challenges. It imbalances all three doshas, feeds candida overgrowth, and adds toxins (ama) to the system. Reducing both together is especially supportive.

Your Gentle 4-Step Transition Plan

  1. Reduce gradually (this is the kindest way) Example: If you drink 2 cups a day, drop to 1 cup for a week, then ½ cup the next week.

  2. Create new comforting rituals Warm herbal teas, golden milk, or my favorite — the Roasted Barley & Chicory Latte below.

  3. Focus on what you’re gaining Keep a simple journal. Notice improvements in energy, mood, sleep, and clarity.

  4. Be gentle with yourself You’ve been using a stimulant, so there may be a short adjustment period of fatigue or headaches. Rest more, drink extra water, and trust the process.

The Latte That Made It Easy: Roasted Barley & Chicory Latte

This has become my daily hug-in-a-mug. It’s bitter and sweet in the most balanced way, creamy, warming, and deeply nourishing without any jitters or crash. It’s augmenting (warming, grounding, and building ojas) and perfect for supporting all doshas when made with the notes below.

Serves 1 | Prep time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp ghee

  • Pinch of cinnamon

  • Pinch of cardamom

  • 1 Tbsp carob powder

  • 1–2 tsp roasted barley and chicory combo (such as Roasted Pero or similar)

  • 1 cup whole organic non-homogenized milk (raw if available; or your favorite plant-based milk)

  • 1 cup boiling water

  • 1 tsp maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Heat the ghee in a small saucepan over low heat. Add cinnamon, cardamom, and carob powder. Stir until beautifully aromatic (about 30 seconds).

  2. Pour in the milk and boiling water.

  3. Mix in the roasted barley and chicory combo.

  4. Stir in the maple syrup and gently warm (do not boil).

  5. Let it cool slightly, then sip mindfully and enjoy.

Notes

  • Summer twist: Use fresh coconut milk for a cooling Coconut Latte.

  • For fiery digestion (pitta): Use less cinnamon.

  • For earthy digestion (kapha): Add a pinch of extra ginger for lightness.

  • Best enjoyed on its own or after a light meal.

What Life Looks Like Without Caffeine

When you create space for your natural energy, you step into sattva which is balance, harmony, clarity, and peace. Your mind feels stable and strong. Your body feels vital, supple, and grounded. Sleep comes easily. Meditation and presence feel natural.

This is Brahmacharya in action: choosing what truly nourishes you so you can live with more creativity, discernment, and joy.

You’ve got this, beautiful. Your body already knows how to feel energized. Sometimes it just needs a little gentle support to remember.

If this resonates, try the latte this week and let me know how it feels. I’d love to hear your experience in the comments or on Instagram @veena_ayurveda.
